SU-85 Tank Destroyer

In December 1942 began a SU-122 production, first Soviet modern self propelled gun with 122 mm M-30S howitzer, on the T-34 medium tank chassis. SU-122 was designed to close artillery support of Soviet infantry. If German used on battlefield new "Panther" and "Tiger" tanks, Soviet was construct a new tank destroyer. On the SU-122 carriage was mounted a 85 mm Mk.1943 D-5S gun. Between August 1943 and September 1944, 2329 SU-85 and 315 SU-85M had been produced in "Uralmash" Factory (Svierdlovsk). Since March 1944 Polish Army used ca. 80 examples.
Museum example its early version of the SU-85 and was damaged during battle near Oder River (south of the Kustrin) in February 1945.
